Germany conquered and occupied most of Europe and Northern Africa during the Second World War. Millions of Jews and other minorities were persecuted and killed amidst the Holocaust.

The first proto-Neanderthal traits appeared in Europe as early as 600,000–350,000 years ago. Neanderthals were named after "Neander Valley" (near Dusseldorf in the west of Germany), where the first Neanderthal remains were found.
