First of all, two of the best German players were missing, as “Topdog“ Dieter Hussmann and current “German Champion” Birgitt Hussmann were solving administrative challenges. And since the aspiring “young and wild” (U20) were playing in the UN-Youth Teams, the last places were reserved for the German ladies and men. Still, nobody headed home empty-handed.
Some positive surprises:

Ulla Voltin (2nd from the left, here with Andres Rosch, Kerstin Runge and Maike Tischer) already won 9 out of 14 games at her first ISA-participation, a.o. Against Doreen Norman (CAN2.) By winning 50% of her games, Ina Schwarten convinced as well, beating e.g. Glenna Earle (CAN1.)
Lore Wuellner (5 victories, 2 ties) and Irene Hoffmanns (5 victories) fulfilled expectations. And Nobi Mueller-Kim was a great surprise, winning against Wilma Rudolph (USA1.) Kerstin Runge was happy about one victory (against 16-year-old Maike Tischer, who surprisingly won 3 games herself) out of three games, before she was replaced by Fatima Alves (thank you!,) due to health issues.

For the men, former double “German Champion” Sebastian Runge proved once again that he was the one to beat, with 8 victories out of 10 games and (a shared) 6th place in the single standings. Oliver Schwarten and Sven Wuellner had a winning quote of 50%, while Willi Wuesthoff could demonstrate 4 victories and 1 tie out of 11 games total.

Best German player belonged to the UN-Youth team and was a pleasant surprise to everyone: Marcel Hinkel (5th from the left) won 10 out of 12 games (a.o against Peter Berg (CAN1)) and took home 5th place of the single standings. Nation-ranked #1 Torben Hussmann (73%), Philipp Schloegl (63%) and Marius Runge (60%,) each won more than half of their games. Not to forget Adrian Gepel (46%) and 15-year-old Lukas Tischer (40%) who were part of the success of their teams.

We hope that for Seattle/Washington/USA in 2012 the best German players will be able to compete… a place on the podium sounds feasible!
